Match Report Sat 9th Feb Cardiff Corinthians 3 v 2 Llangeinor AFC

Llangeinor went into this game with their morale high after a battling draw with table topping neighbours Bettws in mid week.

The late withdrawal of Dean Vokes meant a start for Karl Gardner. And with keeper Steve John withdrawing during the warm up it left Llan with no option but to put the bus driver in goal. Darren Quigley picked up the gloves for the second time in 2 weeks.

The opening 5 minutes saw the Corries bombard the Llan goal and only lady luck kept us in the game.

After we settled we took control, and both Nicky Maggs and Martin Davies came close on a couple of occasions. The corries mounted a rare attack on 30 minutes and a deflected cross managed to beat stand in keeper Darren Quigley and hit the top corner of the net. Just before the interval Lloyd Griffiths blasted over when it looked easier to score.

In the second half it was a total contrast as the home side pushed Llan back time after time. The second goal came for the Corries after 64 minutes and they managed to capitalise on a mistake by Big Quig on 80 minutes to put them into a comfortable 3 - 0 lead.

Llan never gave up the fight though, but the breakthrough came too late when Nicky Maggs scored a screamer of a free kick from 25 yards in the 91st minute. Just a minute later Llan mounted another attack and a fine ball into the box found Lloyd Griffiths who powered home a header from 8 yards that gave the keeper no chance.

The final whistle came on the restart and Llan were left to wonder what might have been if they could have converted one of their earlier chances.

LLANGEINOR AFC - CLUB HISTORY

Our Village is one of approx 1000 inhabitants, situated at the entrance to the Garw Valley. Approx 6 miles North of Bridgend.

Llangeinor have a history of football going back to before the second world war, when football was played down at Pandy Woods. The move to Llangeinor Park came after a brief spell playing on Llangeinor Common.
We shared Llangeinor Park with Pontycymmer Rugby Club. Both fields running parallel to each other (East to West).

When the Swimming baths were built in 1967 the new access road took away some of the football field, so both pitches overlapped. This meant that only one game could be played at a time.
With the development of Lawrence Park, Pontycymmer had a new home and this meant Llangeinor could revert to 1 field which was a Football pitch. The field was turned around after a couple of years to the position it is in now (North / South).
On the football front we were playing in the Bridgend & District League during the early sixties and progressed to the Port Talbot & district League to enable us to progress to the South Wales Amateur League. After success in the Port Talbot League we were accepted into the Amateur League in 1972.
We achieved reasonable success by being promoted to the First Division at our first attempt.
Off the field in 1982 we managed to secure a new Clubhouse at the ground. The then committee took a big gamble and it paid off, with a first class facility that has run alongside the football section successfully since.

During the next 20 years we went up and down a couple of times before reaching the pinnacle in 1992 when we won the First Division title, and what we thought would be promotion to the Welsh Football League.  A stand was built and dugouts and perimeter barrier erected, unfortunately this was not completed by the Welsh League deadline, and we remained in the Amateur league for another 14 years.
Immediately after this rebuff from the Welsh League we experienced the break up of our most successful team to date. Players left to play at the higher level, and we couldn’t blame them.

We battled on and over the next few seasons saw even more of our players leaving to play for Bettws in the newly formed Senior League. Our decline into the second division of the Amateur league coincided with Bettws pushing for promotion into the Welsh League. They finally achieved their first objective of Welsh League Football as we struggled to consolidate our place in the first Division of the Amateur League.
Our fortunes started to change and we had a good season in 2002 when we reached the final of the FAW Trophy. We played Cefn United in the final at Caersws. We lost the game 2 – 0, but that final gave us belief in ourselves, and since then we have established a good squad of players including a couple of quality youngsters.
These players were instrumental in us winning the Amateur League on the last day of the season 2005/06 when a 1 – 0 away win at Cwmaman Institute sealed our title .
As there was no play off, ( Sully Sports ground did not meet the Welsh League Criteria ) Llangeinor were duly promoted to the Welsh Football League.

This achievement was down to a lot of hard work not only by the players and manager Phil Popham, but by everyone behind the scenes who had waited so long for success.
Achieving a second successive promotion was more than we could have hoped for, and this season we will be looking to consolidate our position in the Welsh League Division 2.

We have come a long way, and we are looking to progress at a steady rate. We are trying to improve facilities here at Llangeinor Park, and the new multi sports pitch is evidence of that. In the closed season we have added a pathway from the entrance gate to the stand, and other improvements are in the pipeline. Including a full refurbishment of the changing rooms.

Last season Damian Lacey was the manager who led us to promotion, this season there is a new man at the helm after Damian resigned due to increased family and work commitments. We owe Damian a great thanks for his commitment.
The new manager to tart the season is Gareth Darks.
Gareth is no stranger to titles as he has been there and done it as the saying goes. He was player of the year 2 seasons ago, and but for a knee injury last season he would have been there abouts again.
He has fine tuned the squad this season adding a few new and some not so new faces.
We know he will not settle for second best, and he will be urging his players on to better things for this club.

After a not so good start to the season, we parted company with Gareth, and we wish him well for the future.

The new manager who was unveiled in mid December is Chris Wells. Chris will still be playing, and as he took Garw Athletic to the second division title last season, he is well aware of the challange he faces in the coming months. And I am sure he will be looking for new faces during the transfer window as we have lost a number of players with the departure of the previous manager.
Only time will tell !!!
